In New York, Carnegie Fabrics has launched biobased fabrics for outdoor upholstery. Made from sugarcane, the Outdoor Biobased Xorel line is carbon-positive, 90% renewable, and durable enough for outdoor use.

“Sourced from rapidly renewable sugar cane, the material has a significantly lower environmental footprint than any fossil fuel-derived product,” Carnegie Fabrics tells design publication dezeen. “Sugar cane also has a lower carbon footprint than many other bio-based sources, such as beet or corn.”

Using sugarcane also gives the fabrics antibacterial and stain-resistant properties.
