Brunei’s largest card issuer has launched credit and debit cards made from biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastic to demonstrate its “commitment to tackling the sustainability challenges facing the world.”

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam says the new cards have the same functionality as conventional cards but emit 70% fewer greenhouse gas emissions to produce.

“BIBD worked closely with our card manufacturer to ensure a more sustainable alternative to the current materials we use in our cards today,” BIBD’s Deputy Managing Director II and Head of Retail Banking Group Irwan bin Haji Lamit, tells Borneo Bulletin.

The cards are already available for existing BIBD customers and new customers. BIBD hopes over time all its cards in circulation will be made from PLA.
