In Spain, fast fashion giant ZARA is using pineapple-based vegan leather called Piñatex in a range of sneakers, sandals and accessories. London’s Ananas Anam, which produces the leather alternative, tells vegconomist their material is the most sustainable plant-based leather alternative available at scale.
The PIÑATEX x ZARA SA line uses Piñatex in the uppers of sneakers, and a metallic version of the material is being used as highlights on a line of bags.
Several brands, including Nike and H&M, have also used Piñatex in their products. “[E] ach brand collaboration is presenting its own set of new and exciting challenges,” Melanie Broyé-Engelkes, CEO of Ananas Anam, recently told the publication. “We are big believers in ‘changing giants from the inside’ to create impact at scale.”
