In New Zealand, WoolAid has introduced natural bandages made of merino wool. The company claims the material is better for healing because it is soft, breathable and hypoallergenic, and also better for the environment because it biodegrades within 4-5 months of being thrown away.
Founder Lucas Smith tells New Atlas the idea came to him when he worked as a mountaineering guide in Southern New Zealand. He found the plastic bandages he supplied for frequent blisters and scrapes “at odds” with the country’s natural beauty.
The merino wound pads wick and disperse moisture, aiding in healing. WoolAid also notes that the merino used is “hyperfine” so that it feels soft and naturally regulates temperature.
WoolAid is currently available at certain New Zeeland retailers and will launch in the US this fall for $9.99 for a package of 15 regular and XL bandages and $5.99 for a portable five-pack.
