In the United Kingdom, a music industry sustainability collective has unveiled the world’s first bioplastic record as an eco-friendly alternative to standard vinyl LPs.
The launch by Evolution Music was part of Music Declares Emergency’s Turn Up the Volume week, an event meant to coincide with Earth Day and serve as a “call for unity and human connection, to come together across divides to face the climate and ecological emergency.”
The bioplastic LP is thought to be the world’s first. Its designers say the bioplastic alternative has lower toxic impacts than producing traditional polyvinyl chloride LPs while maintaining the same sound quality.
“We see this product as the first in a new wave of solutions that will help to address some of the most important issues of our time,” Marc Carey, Evolution Music CEO, tells Clash Music. “Having support and advocacy from leaders in the music industry, particularly those at the forefront tackling environmental and social issues, proves there’s a serious demand to move things forward, to turn around the huge impacts of the music industry, and quickly.”
