In Sweden, electric car manufacturer Polestar has tapped artist Thijs Biersteker and his Woven Studio design group to showcase the strength and durability of biobased materials.

For the project, Biersteker  created an interactive sculpture named “We Harvest Wind” that was inspired by Polestar’s Life Cycle Assessment report. The work features a spherical shape suspended by a single pole and three fans to make the sculpture move.

“We made the blades in the sculpture from 3D printed recycled PET plastic, and the outer wings were made with the flax-based structure and a new eco-friendly and corn-based resin—a combination of materials which was developed during the project by Woven Studio and Polestar,” explains Thijs Biersteker. “We developed a composite between the flax and polylactic acid (PLA), which is basically a biopolymer that is biodegradable and made of corn. The combination of these two materials created a really organic feel to the artwork.”

Woven Studio, of which Biersteker is the creative lead, aims to give research “reach beyond the lab and science magazines, by creating art installations and other ways of unique communication around the latest scientific discoveries.”  Woven Studio and Polestar previously worked together to incorporate biobased polymers into Polestar’s latest prototype, Polestar 2.  The car features a 100% vegan upholstered interior.
