In Montreal, vegan brand Matt + Natt will begin incorporating leather made from apple juice industry waste into its handbags.

The first bags to use the material—dubbed AppleSkin—will be its forthcoming Studio 901 collection. “After an abundance of research, sweat, and tears, it’s finally here … The collection of all collections … One that is like no other and will blow your mind. Discover a collection that pushes all boundaries and takes ‘an apple a day’ to a whole other level,” Matt + Nat President and CEO Manny Kohli posted on social media.

The line will include several handbags, a backpack, and totes with gold detailing. The interior of the Studio 901 bags will be made out of recycled water bottles, as with all Matt+Nat bags.

AppleSkin is produced by Italy’s Frumat using the cellulose-rich apple skin and core pulp leftover from juicing.  Pamela Anderson, in partnership with Ahoka Paris, launched a line of handbags using AppleSkin last year. The material has also been used in Gus*Modern furniture.
