Shrimp weapon inspires unbreakable dental crown material

In Finland, researchers at VTT Technical Research Center of Finland have created a cellulose-based nanocomposite inspired by the ultra-strong clubs shrimp use to pulverize prey such as clams. 

VTT says the material, made from a mixture of birch-cellulose and genetically engineered proteins, can be used to make dental implant crowns. Being stronger but much lighter than other technical ceramics, the material also has the potential to be used in sports gear, body army, aerospace, and electronics.  

VTT, in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University, says the material was “bioinspired” by the impact-resistant dactyl club of the mantis shrimp. The work was reported in a recent issue of Advanced Materials.
