In Hungary, Coca-Cola has begun a trial of paper bottles. The beverage giant says the 250-mL bottles are 100% recyclable and made from sustainably sourced wood. A recycled polyethylene terephthalate liner maintains structural integrity of the packaging. Just 2,000 prototypes will be used for the company’s dairy-free smoothie, AdeZ.
Availability will be limited to Hungarian online grocer kifli.hu.
The prototype is part of the Paboco Pioneer initiative to explore paper-based packaging. Other Paboco members include Carlsberg, Absolut, and L’Oreal. Carlsberg and Absolut are also trialing similar packaging prototypes.
