Spanish research center looks to squeeze more value from citrus waste

In Spain, a European Union-funded project is looking to develop economically viable products from citrus waste. The project is being led by Aitiip Centro Tecnológico. Partners include Spanish supermarket chain Eroski and AMC Innova Juice and Drinks. 

The first phase used the peels and pulp of citrus to manufacture a bioplastic, which the group used to make a prototype juice bottle and cosmetics container. Moisturizing masks and face creams were also developed. 

According to fruitnet.com, Spain generates hundreds of thousands of tons of citrus waste each year. The waste can be fed to livestock, but high shipping costs and the potential for the waste to ferment while in route pose challenges.
