In California,  WL Gore & Associates, maker of the ubiquitous waterproof material Gore-Tex, has partnered with biobased polymer company Checkerspot to develop more eco-friendly textile coatings.

The two will collaborate at Gore’s Innovation Center to develop new performance materials. “Our material science expertise and decades of industry experience help pioneering startups like Checkerspot turn concepts into realities and achieve mutually beneficial goals,” says Mike Magyar, technical scout at the Gore Innovation Center.

Switzerland’s Beyond Surface Technology will also participate by developing new textiles finishes. The company specializes in biobased alternatives to perfluorinated chemicals.

Gore aims to eliminate PFCs from its consumer fabrics. Checkerspot, which uses microbes to produce oils, is among the startups included in the Fashion for Good accelerator dedicated to making the fashion industry more sustainable.
