In Germany, BASF has launched a new bioactive extracted from the chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) that it says fortifies skin’s natural protection and reduces inflammatory responses that lead to fine lines, dark circles, and redness.

The chaga mushroom is indigenous to the Northern Canadian forest. BASF says chaga is a “superfood renowned for various health benefits and has both traditional and modern uses.”

Dubbed Inolixir, BASF says it works in two ways. After five days it was found to “mitigat[e] fatigue lines, dark circles and dullness,” then with longer-term use—7–28 days—anti-redness and anti-dullness benefits were reported.
