In Bangladesh, the government has approved a taka 100 million ($1.18 million) grant to produce biodegradable bags from jute.
Dubbed Sonali bags, the project will use funds from the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund. The grant was approved at a meeting in Dhaka on Sunday, according to Environment, forest and climate change minister and chairman of the trustee board Md Shahab Uddin. Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation will produce the bags and set up a laboratory to research the process. The Southeast Asian country banned polyethylene bags in 2002.
