In Ontario, Mirexus Biotechnologies is building a plant in Guelph with $1 million in funding from the government’s department of Agriculture and Agri-Food. The company has developed a filtration process to extract glycogen from corn. Brand named PhytoSpherix, the ingredient can be used as a stabilizer, film former, and encapsulant in personal care and cosmetics products. PhytoSpherix improves skin hydration and stabilizes other actives from thermo and photodegradation, according to Mirexus.
The company was founded in 2008 and has raised over $15 million to date, according to cosmeticsdesign.com. The plant will be completed in summer of 2018 and create 70 jobs.
