Well-suited for cropland-short regions

There are a few countries like Brazil where there is ample arable land not currently in intense agriculture or reserved for urban areas or conservation. But those are the exception. Most countries are going to have to meet the 100 percent+ increase in protein demand through intensification of existing cropland, or accessing non-arable land.

As you can see in this picture, the Cellana demonstration facility is based in a lava field, which is about as far from arable land as you can imagine.

 

In the final step before the open ponds, the algae is built up in a closed (but outdoor-based) photobioreactor, cooled by cold seawater.
