In Italy, Bio-on has launched a new oil remediation product based on biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates plastic.

Dubbed Minerv Biorecovery, the PHA micropowders form a porous structure housing bacteria that eat the bioplastic. Nourished by the PHA, the bacteria multiply and attack the oil.

“We have discovered that the particles forming our PHAs bioplastic are the ideal environment for hosting and feeding the special microorganisms that eliminate oil from the sea,” says Marco Astorri, Chairman and CEO of Bio-on. “It is nature looking after itself because our bioplastic… helps protect and feed these bacteria, thus accelerating their natural action.”

Minerv Biorecovery is 100% biodegradable and does not release any residue into the sea.

Validation testing by Istituto per l’Ambiente Marino Costiero del CNR demonstrated seawater polluted with oil was cleaned within three weeks.
