In Finland, Neste will be using oil used in baking doughnuts for May Day to produce renewable diesel fuel. The oil will be donated by Frazer Baker to Neste, which will in turn donate the value of the fuel to the Finnish chapter of SOS Children’s Village International. The amount of oil needed to fry three doughnuts is enough to drive about one kilometer, Neste says. The partnership also aims to remind doughnut makers of proper waste frying oil disposal.
“We were immediately inspired by the cooperation idea, as Fazer Bakery’s primary goal is to prevent the generation of waste and to reduce its volume,” says Nina Elomaa, director, corporate responsibility at Fazer Group.
Doughnuts are very popular in Finland during May Day. Up to 16 million Fazer doughnuts are eaten annually. Fazer’s waste frying fats have also been used in the asphalt and soap industries.
Neste has previously participated in a Christmas waste ham fat campaign in cooperation with the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland.
