In the United Kingdom, three Cambridge-based companies have been selected as finalists to receive Bio-start funding as well as a chance to join a UK synthetic biology accelerator.

Finalists include Entomics, Colorifix, and Quethera. Entomics has optimized black soldier fly larvae to convert food waste into fats and proteins that are then synthesized into protein meal, bio-oil and organic fertilizer. Colorifix uses genetically altered bacteria to fix dyes onto clothing, significantly reducing water use and pollution compared to conventional dying processes. Quethera, meanwhile, is using gene therapies to reduce progressive visual loss in glaucoma and other conditions affecting the optic nerve.

The company with the best business model will receive equity free cash awards, professional services, and free- laboratory space at various UK locations.
