In California, Bolt Threads, a startup making spider silk via fermentation, has produced 50 limited edition ties made from its fabric.
Fashion-forward individuals can sign up for a lottery to be among the first to own the innovative accessory. It comes with a steep price tag of $314, however.
Though it took Bold Thread seven years to develop the technology enough to produce enough fabric for the first tie, the second was “spun” in just 60 days.
In addition to ties, a parka made from spider silk is expected to be launched this year by Japan’s Spiber.
