In Georgia, food and beverage giant PepsiCo and Danimer Scientific have signed a collaboration agreement that will facilitate an expansion of Danimer’s Nodax-brand polyhydroxyalkanoates production capacity.

The agreement will also help PepsiCo meet its goal of transitioning to completely biodegradable packaging for its snack food portfolio.

“Our plan to scale Danimer Scientifics’ technology is a step toward achieving both our greenhouse gas emission reduction and our recoverable and recyclable packaging goals,” says PepsiCo Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Mehmood Khan.

The two companies first began collaborating seven years ago. Danimer’s PHA is FDA approved for food contact, and is certified to safely biodegrade in salt water environments.
