In Finland, the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships opened today with a sustainable twist by Stora Enso who has been working with the organizers to ensure renewable products are used. As the presenting sponsor of the games, Stora Enso has its wood products integrated into the main entrance gate, podiums, shelters and interior of the ski jumping tower and their wood pellets will be used for heating. Paper and board is being used for the printed materials, waste bins, mini snow gliders and cups, and the used paper and board will be collected and recycled into new board products. To show that almost anything at a sporting event can be made from renewable biomaterials instead of nonrenewable fossil fuels, the fans’ stadium horns will be made out of biocomposite.
