In New York, a report called “Beyond the Ships: 2020-2025” created by over 100 experts as part of the U.S. 2016 National Ocean Exploration Forum made several recommendations regarding the future of robotics and advanced technology in ocean exploration. Some of the recommendations discussed the current use of remotely operated vehicles (ROV), similar to UAVs or drones used in airborne precision ag, but a deep sea version. The report highlighted the need for improvements to lower cost sensors and vehicles, machine learning and artificial intelligence, improved energy storage and more. Miniaturization and modularization of deep ROVs and other exploration systems was also recommended to more easily move them from different locations for research around the globe. The report also noted the need for more environmentally responsible sensors and devices that are currently disposable.
