In Canada, the country’s department responsible for public health, Health Canada, has approved TerraVia’s Whole Algal Protein for food use.

With the approval, TerraVia has now secured rights to sell its AlgalVia Whole Algal Protein and its AlgalVia Whole Algal Flour in food use across North America.

AlgalVia Protein-Rich Whole Algae contains over 60% vegan protein plus fiber, lipids, and micronutrients. It is also free of allergens, gluten, and genetically modified organisms and has a neutral flavor and texture. Algal Lipid-Rich Whole Protein is free of trans fat and cholesterol and is a healthier alternative to reduce or replace dairy fats, oil, and egg yolks.

According to market research firm Mintel, 30% of Americans report eating more non-animal sources of protein. Demand for plant-based proteins is increasing along with vegetarian and vegan diets along with demand for allergen-free protein sources.
