In Switzerland, World Business Council for Sustainable Development announced that five new companies have joined their sustainable fuel initiative called below50. The companies include LGE Fund, Scania, United Airlines, UPM and UPS, which together invest in over 100 million gallons of fuel each year. They are joining a group now totaling 30 companies that are changing transportation on a global scale to be more sustainable and below 50% greenhouse gas emissions over fossil fuels. Below50 companies are looking to alternative fuels such as biodiesel, biomaterial based fuel, and new technologies. UPM noted its new BioVerno fuel has up to 80% greenhouse gas reduction. United Airlines is the first airline to join below50. Below50 created an online reference tool that highlights some of the innovative projects from below50 members around the world who are addressing sustainability in their biofuel and biomaterial technologies.
