In Ontario, BioAmber is working to secure an incentive package for its second commercial-scale biobased succinic acid facility. The new plant, which would be up to six times the size of the Sarnia-based plant it brought online last year, could be sited in either Sarnia or in the United States.

The company has been in parallel discussions with both US and Canadian officials, says BioAmber CEO Jean-Francois Huc. In Canada, BioAmber is eying land at Sarnia’s Bluewater Energy Park. Louisiana and Iowa are also in the race as potential locations. Huc says the company is in the third phase of a four-phase application process for a $360-million DOE loan guarantee.

Discussions with both Canadian and American officials have been underway for over a year and are “encouraging and similar in nature,” Huc adds. BioAmber is targeting the second quarter of 2017 to make a final decision.
