Newlight’s marine engine hydrogen retrofit package clears factory acceptance testing
In California, Newlight announced completion of factory acceptance testing for its hydrogen retrofit system for marine engines, approved by classification society RINA. The system is designed for both two- and four-stroke engines and integrates with existing vessel infrastructure, offering shipowners a pathway to reduce emissions without waiting for newbuilds.
Partners in the development include RINA, lomarlabs, AURELIA, and Lomar Shipping. Newlight, based in San Francisco, says the retrofit package offers a practical approach to decarbonizing the existing fleet.
Next up is harbor acceptance testing. While most maritime hydrogen concepts remain at the drawing board, this retrofit system has cleared a key milestone. Newlight says it’s not pitching theory but offering “validated fact ready for your fleet.”
