New Spanish AD plant to geneate 58 GWh of biomethane

In Spain, iAgua reports the construction of this important AD plant, located in the south of the country, began in 2025, under the supervision of a prominent EPC contractor. Now, fully operational, the plant will generate 58 GWh of biomethane that will be injected directly into the gas network, providing sufficient energy for 11,000 homes.

Since the plant uses a mixture of agricultural and livestock waste, including whey, olive pomace, poultry manure and pork slurry, the digestate obtained by the anaerobic digestion process must be pasteurized to comply with European animal by-products regulations — Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 — before it can be used as a valuable agricultural fertilizer.

The use of this digestate is a key element to fulfill Spain’s aspirations to create circular economy projects that actively boost the sustainability of rural areas. In this case, the project not only helps local farmers manage their organic waste, but also provides a low-carbon alternative to synthetic fertilizers.

After studying the different options, the client selected the HRS Digestate Pasteurization System (DPS) with the capacity to pasteurize 200 tons of digestate per day. The HRS DPS has already been successfully installed in biogas plants around the world, preventing the spread of potential pathogens and meeting local legal and quality requirements.
