MOL fires up Hungary’s biggest green hydrogen plant to slash emissions

In Hungary, MOL Group started production at its 10-megawatt green hydrogen plant in Százhalombatta, Hungary, capable of producing 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, aimed at cutting the Danube Refinery’s carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually.

MOL will primarily use the green hydrogen for fuel production, helping the company transition to a lower-carbon future. The plant aligns with MOL’s SHAPE TOMORROW strategy, which aims to make the region more sustainable and energy self-sufficient. By replacing natural gas-based processes, this project will gradually reduce the company’s overall carbon footprint.

MOL’s Vice President of New and Sustainable Businesses, Ádám Horváth, emphasized that the company plans to expand similar projects to Bratislava and Rijeka by 2026, aiming to support the green energy transition across the region. With this EUR 22 million investment, MOL is positioning itself at the forefront of green hydrogen technology, setting a new standard for decarbonization in the energy sector.
