Mitsui E&S completes Japan’s first WinGD methanol engine
In Japan, Mitsui E&S completed factory testing of the country’s first methanol dual-fuel marine engine based on technology from Swiss engine designer WinGD. The engine, built at Mitsui E&S’s plant in Tamano, Okayama Prefecture, will power the first of four new vessels.
It is also the first large WinGD engine manufactured at the Tamano plant, expanding Mitsui E&S’s ability to produce engines from another major international designer.
The engine can run on methanol or conventional fuel, allowing the vessels to use green methanol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Mitsui E&S is coordinating large-engine production between its Tamano plant and the Aioi facility operated by group company Mitsui E&S DU as Japan seeks to expand domestic shipbuilding and marine-engine capacity.
