Mitsubishi Shipbuilding sends first ammonia fuel systems to engine maker
In Japan, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said on February 24 it shipped its first ammonia fuel supply and treatment systems for a marine engine built by Japan Engine Corporation, marking the company’s initial delivery of equipment designed specifically for ammonia fueled vessels.
The systems will be paired with J-ENG’s first ammonia fueled engine and commissioned ahead of onboard use. One unit feeds ammonia safely and steadily to the engine, while the other handles excess ammonia that can arise when switching between conventional fuel oil and ammonia.
Both are designed for remote operation and automatic control, with the aim of improving onboard safety and simplifying operations. The companies expect the combination to be demonstrated on an actual vessel, providing early operating experience for ammonia propulsion hardware.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said the shipment comes as interest grows in ammonia as a next generation marine fuel and that it will strengthen its business structure to respond to anticipated demand for ammonia fueled ships.
