Mexico exploring E10 and E20 possibilities

April 30, 2026 |

In Mexico, the Expansion newspaper reports that if Mexico approves the necessary regulations to increase the use of E10, demand will increase by 17.8 million liters per year. The demand for gasoline in Mexico, between regular and magna, is around 842,000 barrels per day, but if 10% of ethanol is added – and there is no increase in demand – it would be reduced to 758,000 barrels a year. But in case E20 was approved, 168,000 barrels of ethanol would be needed daily, explained Juan José Vidal Amaro undersecretary of hydrocarbons of the Ministry of Energy (Sener).

If the production of ethanol with sugar cane were boosted in Mexico, using the total of the national production that is 55 million tons, about 70,000 barrels of ethanol could be produced daily.
