Maersk takes on 2,800 tonnes of bioethanol in Barcelona
In Spain, Repsol supplied 2,800 tonnes of bioethanol to Maersk’s 16,000-TEU Antonia Maersk at the Port of Barcelona on July 15, marking the port’s first bioethanol bunkering operation.
The delivery was completed under commercial conditions and followed earlier ethanol use aboard the 1,800-TEU Laura Maersk, which has sailed on pure ethanol and ethanol-methanol blends. Maersk operates 23 container ships designed for methanol and is evaluating ethanol as another fuel for those vessels.
Repsol’s Bahía Candela, operated by Mureloil, delivered the fuel while running on battery power, eliminating local emissions from the bunker vessel during the transfer. The companies said the operation showed that Barcelona’s infrastructure, logistics and procedures can support commercial-scale supplies of alcohol-based marine fuels.
