KOMERI and Mokpo Maritime University sign ammonia propulsion research deal
In South Korea, the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute and Mokpo National Maritime University have signed an MOU to jointly develop ammonia fuel supply and propulsion systems for ships, combining KOMERI’s research infrastructure with the university’s training capacity to build a pipeline of specialists in a field that currently has very few.
Ammonia produces no carbon dioxide when burned, making it one of shipping’s more promising zero carbon fuel candidates, though its toxicity and corrosiveness require safety and engine control technologies that do not yet exist at commercial scale. The two institutions will focus on solving those problems while simultaneously training engineers to handle ammonia fuel systems once the market opens.
The agreement was signed on March 10 at KOMERI’s Coastal Marine Technology Research Center in Mokpo, South Korea.
