Kawasaki Heavy starts Kawasaki hydrogen plant with 18-ton daily capacity
In Japan, International Business Times reported that Kawasaki Heavy Industries said it will begin construction of a hydrogen production facility in the Kawasaki coastal industrial area in Kanagawa Prefecture,in Japan.
The plant, to be built in Ogimachi in Kawasaki Ward, will use steam methane reforming, or SMR, to produce 18 tons of hydrogen per day at nominal capacity. The facility is scheduled for completion around spring 2029 and will manufacture hydrogen with 99.999% purity using city gas, known in Japan as 13A, as its main feedstock, according to the report.
Hydrogen produced at the facility is planned to be supplied through a high-pressure hydrogen pipeline to the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal in Ogishima, also in Kawasaki Ward, as part of a commercial liquefied hydrogen supply chain demonstration project carried out by Japan Hydrogen Energy Co., or JSE, under a Green Innovation Fund program run by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO.
The pipeline project is being developed as Japan’s first domestic high-pressure hydrogen pipeline in the Kawasaki coastal area, the report added.
