Japan strengthens oil reserves and SAF obligations
In Japan, Energy News reported that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved, on August 24, 2026, a framework built around three strands: a support mechanism for oil transport routes avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, a timeline for rebuilding national oil reserves, and new sustainable aviation fuel blending obligations for oil companies.
On the aviation front, new sustainable aviation fuel blending obligations were approved for oil companies, under a public-private council co-organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), according to the report.
These obligations follow on from measures taken since the start of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. A detailed implementation timeline has not yet been specified, it added.
