Industry groups push European Commission to lighten proposal for food crop use limit
In Germany, industry groups are pressuring the European Commission to cut back on their efforts to cap on the use food crops in biofuels production from 10% to 5%. While lowering the cap has been in discussion since it was first set at 10% four yeas ago, the EU executive was set to formally propose the 5% cap in draft legislation until biofuels campaigners executed a last-minute campaign to weaken the cap. “It is very likely now that without major pressure, the 5% limit will be moved up closer to 7 or 8 percent,” said Claude Turmes, a Green EU lawmaker.
