India’s Supreme Court questions feasibility of supplying E100 vehicles

November 2, 2026 |

In India, the ’s Supreme Court has asked the central government how it would ensure sufficient ethanol supplies if vehicles capable of running on 100% ethanol (E100) are approved. The government told the court that supporting such vehicles would require large-scale changes to manufacturing arrangements. The discussion follows amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules allowing flex-fuel vehicles capable of using blends up to E100. However, the government has said it has no immediate plans to increase petrol blending beyond the existing E20 level. The court also highlighted the need to consider farmers’ interests and environmental impacts as it examines disputes over ethanol allocation for the 2025–26 supply year.
