Indian sugar industry concerned about only receiving 28% of 2025/26 ethanol quota

October 30, 2025 | Meghan Sapp

In India, Fortune India reports the government expects only 28% of the ethanol sourced in the 2025/26 marketing year that kicks off Nov. 1 will come from sugarcane, down from 91% in 2019/20 and 40% in 2023/24 and 33% in the current season. The Indian Sugar Mills Association is concerned that continued cuts to the quotas given by the government will lead to underutilization of distillation capacity in addition to excess sugar supplies and delays in paying farmers.
