India to mandate 1% SAF blend for international flights from January

October 27, 2026 |

In India, Indian Aviation News reported that India is set to introduce a 1% sustainable aviation fuel blending requirement for international flights from January 2027, as the country moves towards reducing aviation-related carbon emissions and meeting global climate commitments.

The government’s phased targets envisage SAF accounting for 2% of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for international flights from 2028 and 5% from 2030, according to the report.

However, industry sources have raised concerns about the absence of a comprehensive national SAF policy and a clear framework for carbon credits, with implementation approaching. Scaling up production, ensuring reliable supplies and managing the higher cost of sustainable fuel will be important challenges for airlines and fuel suppliers. The government has already amended the Aviation Turbine Fuel Control Order to cover SAF-blended aviation fuel, providing a regulatory basis for its use in India, the report added.
