IMO rewrites methyl/ethyl alcohol fuel safety guidance
In the United Kingdom, DNV reports the International Maritime Organization’s cargo and container subcommittee met from from September 14 to 18 to revise methanol and ethanol fuel safety guidelines, rewriting all sections of the existing guidance to incorporate experience gained from ships already using the fuels.
The revisions give ship designers more flexibility in fuel tank placement and leakage handling, introduce a new approach to ventilating fuel spaces and expand requirements covering bunkering stations and fire extinguishing. They also add guidance for bunkering operations and personal protective equipment. The revisions still require approval by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee before becoming final.
