Hyundai Motor Group unveils hydrogen ecosystem vision
In South Korea, Seoul Economic Daily reported that Hyundai Motor Group presented a roadmap for building a hydrogen ecosystem that brings together its technology capabilities in hydrogen, artificial intelligence and robotics at World Hydrogen Expo 2026, a hydrogen industry trade show in South Korea.
At the event, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled for the first time its polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis module technology for hydrogen production. The technology integrates 12 electrolysis stacks to form a 5-megawatt electrolyzer stack module (ESM). A single ESM unit can produce 700 tons of hydrogen a year, and arranging multiple modules in parallel allows expansion to water electrolysis plants of several hundred megawatts. The group currently operates a 1-megawatt container-type demonstration facility in Gwangju and is preparing additional demonstration work in Boryeong, Buan and Jeju, according to the report.
The group also introduced its “W2H” model, which produces hydrogen from waste resources. The model generates hydrogen from biogas produced by organic waste. Its significance lies in establishing a resource circulation structure that goes beyond simply producing hydrogen to converting waste back into energy used in the local area. Hyundai Motor Group is implementing this strategy around HTWO Energy Cheongju, a combined hydrogen production and charging facility.
Hyundai Motor Group also presented the Saemangeum AI Valley as a blueprint for a future hydrogen ecosystem connecting renewable energy, hydrogen, AI data centers, robotics and urban infrastructure. The goal is to build hydrogen solutions covering everything from hydrogen production and storage to mobility, as well as applications in urban living, port logistics and manufacturing, the report added.
