Hong Kong tops up a supertanker and joins the LNG fueling club

March 5, 2026 |

In Hong Kong, Manifold Times reports energy firms CLPe and CNOOC completed the city’s first ship to ship LNG refueling of a giant oil tanker when a fuel supply vessel delivered liquefied natural gas to the tanker Maran Dione at the South Cheung Chau Anchorage.

The transfer took about seven hours and marked a milestone for Hong Kong as it begins handling LNG fueling for some of the largest ships afloat. The fuel allows the tanker to sail long distances without stopping to refuel, roughly the span of a Middle East to East Asia round trip.

CLPe said the operation was carried out with CNOOC, which supplied the LNG using a specialized bunkering vessel.

“The successful completion of this bunkering operation demonstrates the strong partnership between CLPe and CNOOC,” said CLPe Managing Director Ringo Ng.

“This achievement highlights CLPe’s capability to serve a diverse range of vessel types and reinforces our commitment to accelerating the adoption of green marine fuels.”

The fueling also underscores Hong Kong’s ambition to expand its role as a maritime fuel hub as shipping lines explore alternatives to conventional bunker fuel.
