Hong Kong launches first government-led green fuel training for mariners

April 15, 2026 |

In Hong Kong, the Transport and Logistics Bureau has launched what it calls the world’s first government-led training program designed to build green maritime fuel expertise across the shipping industry.

The program, run in partnership with the UN Global Compact’s Maritime Just Transition Task Force and hosted at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, follows a train-the-trainer model. Participants learn the fundamentals of alternative marine fuels, then carry that knowledge to seafarers and shore-based staff at their own institutions.

The course targets maritime trainers, regulators, ship managers, shipowners, and university students. It is conducted in English and funded by Hong Kong’s Maritime and Aviation Training Fund.

The initiative addresses a skills gap the industry has struggled to close as green fuel adoption accelerates faster than the workforce can absorb the technical and operational demands of running vessels on alternative fuels.
