Hamburg lays groundwork for ammonia bunkering
In Germany, the Hamburg Port Authority and MB Energy have completed a risk assessment and safety plan for future ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering at the Port of Hamburg. Developed with terminal operators, shipping companies and local authorities, the work will help prepare the port to safely supply ammonia to container ships, cruise ships and various types of vehicle carriers.
The partners expect ammonia to become an established alternative marine fuel and said the preparations will support future bunkering as ammonia-powered ships enter service.
MB Energy’s planned ammonia import terminal, expected to begin operations in 2029, would help secure fuel supplies for Hamburg and other northern German ports. An ammonia bunker barge is also being considered to supply ships within the port and at other locations.
