Germany sets aside $1.68 billion for hydrogen in 2027 carbon contracts auction
In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Germany’s economy ministry has opened preliminary consultation for its 2027 Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfD) tender, with at least $1.68 billion set aside specifically for hydrogen. The full budget for the scheme stands at up to $9.74 billion.
CCfDs work by having the state cover the cost difference for companies switching to lower-carbon production methods over a 15-year contract period. The dedicated hydrogen allocation can be increased if demand exceeds the initial reserve.
The package also covers support for gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 4 gigawatts earmarked for eventual hydrogen operation. Two gigawatts will be tendered in 2027 for hydrogen use from 2040, with a further 2GW tendered between 2030 and 2032 for conversion from 2043, according to the report.
