Germany set to fine airlines for failing to use sustainable jet fuel
In Germany, DPA reported that German transport authorities are planning to impose a penalty on airlines that fail to use sufficient SAF.
The Transport Ministry aims to introduce a penalty charge of $1,53 per ton of SAF that airlines fail to use as required under an EU regulation, according to the report.
Since 2025, airlines have been legally required to use an initial blend of 2% SAF for all flights departing from Europe. Under existing rules, this share is set to rise to 5% by 2030 and 70% by 2050.
The German Aviation Association (BDL) welcomed the fact that the proposed legislation does not introduce additional national requirements beyond the EU requirements, according to the report.
But the BDL said revenues from the penalty should be used to support the development of alternative fuels rather than flow into the general government budget, it added.
