EPA approves CoverCress pathway for renewable fuel credits
In Washington, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved Renewable Energy Group’s petition to generate Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) from renewable fuels produced using CoverCress oil at Chevron’s Geismar, Louisiana, facility. The approval allows renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel to qualify for D4 biomass-based diesel RINs, while renewable naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas qualify for D5 advanced biofuel RINs. The decision applies specifically to the Geismar facility and its approved production processes, following EPA’s lifecycle greenhouse gas assessment based on the company’s 2024 petition.
