Ecopetrol, GIZ ink partnership to produce SAF from green hydrogen

July 30, 2026 |

In Colombia, Ecopetrol and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) signed an agreement to develop feasibility and engineering studies for a pilot plant for synthetic fuels in Cartagena. The initiative aims to promote the use of green hydrogen in the production of e-SAF.

As part of the alliance, technical analyses for the pilot plant will be carried out over the next 24 months, which could leverage the infrastructure of the Coral Project that Ecopetrol is building at the Cartagena Refinery, with a production capacity of up to 800 tons of green hydrogen per year.

GIZ will contribute specialized technical knowledge and international experience in Power-to-X technologies, Ecopetrol said.
