DNV says most 2050 shipping fuel choices remain open
In Norway, classification society DNV’s newly published Maritime Forecast to 2050 estimates that nearly three quarters of fuel consumption capacity in its high demand 2050 scenario will be aboard ships that have not yet been ordered, leaving their fuel technology undecided.
DNV projects low GHG fuel demand for ships above 400 gross tonnage operating internationally at 33 million to 185 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2050. The high case assumes the IMO Net Zero Framework takes effect, the low case assumes no new global GHG regulation.
Based on current shipbuilding choices, DNV expects a significant share of future capacity to remain capable of conventional fuel oil or LNG. That would increase reliance on low GHG diesel and methane, including biofuels such as FAME, HVO and biomethane, to cut emissions from those ships.
