Companies pay to reserve nearly 6GW on Germany’s planned hydrogen backbone

August 6, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that companies are beginning to make paid commitments for capacity on Germany’s planned national hydrogen backbone, providing its operators with an early indication of where producers, traders and industrial users expect hydrogen demand to emerge.

Germany’s hydrogen core network operators reported that market participants had reserved almost 6GW of entry and exit capacity by July 23, 2026, according to the report.

That represents roughly twice the volume disclosed in the previous market update on May 13.

An additional 0.6GW has been contractually reserved for transport between network clusters, while requests covering another 0.5GW are being evaluated, it added.

The reservations span large parts of the planned national network rather than being concentrated in a single industrial region.
